2009 Jefferson Cup Recap

There was a good showing by the team at the Jefferson Cup on Sunday. Many riders volunteered as well as racing, making for a long day!

Cate, riding in Marshall Mechanical colours, dragged herself around the course in the W123 field. She’ll be on fire in July (either from her speed or the high temps). [I realise that the analogy is a bit innapropriate for a team sponsored by a HVAC firm]

Maggie, Sarah and Robin flew UVA colours in the W4 race. Sarah got into the break, and came home in 7th place, a fantastic result in a field of 40. Maggie, riding with a frisbee related injury, had to call it a day and find some ice, and Robin came home safe and sound in the chase group.

The cat 5 field featured Will, James, Pat, Evan, Jeff and resident Lord of Spin, Sean Garvey. Jeff and Sean took several flyers off the front, but got brought back. Meanwhile, half the field went out the back, with James, Pat and Evan feeling the heat and pace; this race was far faster than collegiate C and D races, and longer than D to boot. Jeff tried for a last ditch attack, but got rammed by one of the chasers, taking both him and Will out on the line. Sean made it through for 3rd.

Quinn and David were the team’s representatives in the M4 field. 120 riders lined up, most of them thinking that they could win. As a result, the pace was quite high and most breaks were doomed until one snuck away on the final lap and held a small lead to the finish. Quinn managed to finish in the field, which was thinned to about 60. David had a terrible day, got dehydrated and had to abandon.

Adam rode in the M123 race. It was a stacked field, so any kind of finish was hard earnt!

Thanks to Ruth for putting on the race, and extra thanks to all the team riders who volunteered!

Registering for ACCC races

This question has come up a few times, so let me go through it.

1 – are you going to race lots or a little? If you are going to race lots, I’d recommend you buy a USAC annual license. You can do that here.

Go to www.usacycling.org and click on the membership button to the left. You need a collegiate license, which is $30. You can add the normal USAC license for another $30 if you intend to race over the summer. Your club is the University of Virginia.

If you don’t intend on doing too many races, or just want to try it out, I would go for a day license, which is available at the race. Make sure you get to race registration early so you can still get a warm up in.

2 – Ok, so now you have your license. Next, you need a bib number. You only have to do this once.

Go to http://www.acccyling.com/ (they registered the domain with the spelling mistake) and go to registration. Then click on “bib number” then “register now”. At the first race you attend, pick up your numbers from the registration tent.

3 – Nearly there. Now you need to register for the races you intend to attend. This is especially important for time trials, since there is no registration on the day for those. Go to http://www.acccyling.com/ and go to registration. Click on the link to the race (it only displays the next race weekend) and follow the steps. If you register and then can’t make it, it does not cost us any money; better to register rather than wait til the day of the race if you are unsure.

Ok, so now you are all set in terms of paperwork. Hopefully, you will have joined the club and paid dues already. You will also need a UVA jersey (you can ride in plain shorts; you don’t have to have UVA shorts). If you do not have one, we do have some left ($50 each at team price). There are also some folks around that have spares. Email the list if you need a jersey.

Navy Criterium and TT

The US Naval Academy was our host last weekend, up in Annapolis, Md. The criterium has a somewhat fearsome reputation, but turned out pretty well. Ron and Tom were in the first race of the day; men’s D. The pack got torn apart by the head wind and was spread all over the road. Both of our guys kept it upright and finished the race. Ron would ask me to add that he would have finished at least two places higher if he hadn’t dropped his chain on the last lap.

Determined not to repeat Ron’s gear changing fiasco, I resolved to keep it big ring all the way (not so tough with a cyclocross 48t ring up front). I lined up behind an experienced racer from Pfeiffer, thinking he would get his clip in, but no. Oops. So I started the race in the worst possible way – at the back. Sure enough, the wind caused gaps to open and I was on the wrong end of one, leaving me to ride to 17th and be outsprinted by a guy with a knackered wheel :)

Unfortunately, bad weather stopped the time trial from happening. Pity really, as my cross bike would have been a decent bet for a snowy course!

William and Mary is next…

Wolfpack Criterium, day two

Today was an even better day than yesterday for UVa! It started off with the D men’s crit with Jeff, Tom, Ron and Will mixing it up again. Everyone rode strongly. Will had a great race, working with another rider to bridge up to the break and eventually taking 4th! All that after taking an early spill that luckily resulted in only a wee bit of blood. Next came Jeff with another great showing in the Men’s C crit. Jeff rode like a madman to place 9th. Lastly was Bucky and I in Men’s B. Bucky killed it, winning a prime and placing 6th. Bucky once again worked the race to bring up the pace, putting the hurt on the field, including me! So lots of valiant rides and points, but also lots of UVa racers very stoked on racing and looking forward to the next one. Hope to sere you out there!

From Quinn. NC State’s crit course is a tough one, with a stiff back and a tight chicane. Well done everyone!

Wolfpack Cycling Classic day one

ncstatebracers1

No spills and no loss of blood for any UVa rider today! A great day. The racing started at 8:00 AM, with Sean Garvey racing cat 5. Sean did tons of work making sure the cat 5s weren’t sleeping, and placed in the top ten for his first race! 4 UVa riders were next in the men’s D road race (Jeff, Ron Thomas “T-bone” and Will). All rode strong, with Will placing in the top ten, most likely 8th but no official posting yet. T-Bone did his part for the future of the sport by pulling Jake King to the finish line. Next action was in the Men’s B race, again with 4 UVa riders (Hunter, David, Bucky and Quinn). Good showing all around, with Bucky placing highest, somewhere in the top 15. Bucky also did a lot of work up front to bring a break back in and kept the pace of the race from getting too lazy. We actually had people from several teams working together for a bit with David up front too. Finally came our solo Men’s C rider, Jeff. Jeff looked strong out there and mixed it up in the sprint for a great showing, 6th or 7th. Really impressive rides from everyone! Tomorrow comes the crits.
